For the nth time, it is baby full month not baby shower!

I noticed the term baby shower has been used to describe a full month celebration interchangeably quite recently.

Baby full month celebration is done when the baby is out.

Baby shower celebration is done when the woman is still pregnant.

For ethic Singaporean Chinese, we have this celebration called baby full month as a baby turns a month old (满月). We celebrate this when the baby turns one month old because in the olden times, the mortality rate of babies under a month was high, so if a baby turns a month old, it is something worth celebrating.

Since the rise of K-pop, many followed the Korean culture and celebrate the birth of their babies at 100 days old. It is still celebrated after the baby is born.

I have no idea why Chinese don’t celebrate baby showers traditionally. It might be because we have a risk averse culture and don’t want to jinx anything until it is set in stone.

Or maybe because boys are preferred over girls. The gender imbalance ratio in China should tell you something about Chinese culture. Plus scans doesn’t exist back in the days and we will only spend money to throw a celebration if the baby is a boy. Tsk.

I read somewhere that we need more boys at birth because more boys don’t die from accident than girls before they entered adulthood. Maybe we should skip the whole baby celebrations and celebrate them entering adulthood instead.

Baby full month and baby shower are two totally different types of celebration.

Dragon boat and Mid autumn festivals are different.

Hari Raya Puasa and Haji are different.

Easter and Christmas are different.

Thaipusam and Deepavali are different.

Please use the terms correctly. Don’t even give excuses like this is Singlish. THIS IS NOT SINGLISH. This is just your lack of understanding.
