Do you have a LinkedIn account?
I know some people still don’t or had theirs deactivated because they are “not looking for a job”. So you are not on Facebook because you are not looking for friends?
LinkedIn is important because recruiters and potential employers may be checking you out. It also allows you to connect with the co-worker you do not want to connect socially and privately with. Who knows when an opportunity will knock?
My LinkedIn account is limited to likes on articles and congratulatory messages to my connections. I would have made lots of insults and sarcastic remarks if no one is watching.
Plus, I was in HR and random people sent me messages looking for a job. Please bear in mind not all HR people do recruitment.
Plus plus, I last worked in a big technology company and I get random connections requests which I always declined and marked “I don’t know this person”. 😂
The last ridiculous request was from an ex coworker to help her husband be connected to the incumbent because he wants to know more about the job before applying. I had to apply CSI skills to find out who the hiring manager and incumbent are.
Now you know why I limit my activities on LinkedIn. I don’t ask for favours but can you don’t ask me for anything?
During the first session with my career coach, she went through my LinkedIn and gave me several comments.
1. Don’t copy and paste your career summary from your cv because potential employers who received it want to know more about you via social media.
2. Jobs on cv and LinkedIn should tally. Ok time to combine the 3 positions in the same company into 1 and remove the first job I quit after a few months.
3. Share articles and write your thoughts. It is common sense my thoughts are not official POV of the company but what if what I shared get blown out of proportion in future? Then if an employer forbade me from making any comments while I am employed wouldn’t my LinkedIn be dead?
4. Ask for testimonials from ex colleagues and managers. Hello. This felt like Friendster. I am not comfortable at all leh.
Yes I admit I can do more with my LinkedIn but can I don’t? Ok fine, I’ll do it. Soon…
