Bookworm 07 — Who Moved My Cheese?

Resolution 2022 – Read a book every month, July 2022.

Who Moved My Cheese? by Dr Spencer Johnson.

Are you Sniffy, Scurry, Hem or Haw?

Re-read of this book which was the rage among my managers while the company and department was going through restructuring and process improvements about 10 years ago in the bank but I only picked it up years later.

I always rolled my eyes when the managers said it is their favourite book when asked to share during these engagement sessions. After more than 10 years I still roll my eyes and cringe when I think about. LOL. Maybe favourite book of the year or decade. You can try to impress the management but there is a limit on making this believable.

Who Moved My Cheese? You ask me I ask who?

To summarise the book, ADAPTABILITY and ATTITUDE towards change.

I was never Hem or Haw nor Sniffy but Scurry back then. Change, yup. Bring it on. Tell me what needs to be done.

On hindsight, I could have scurried to a new company instead of staying on to help out in retrenchment exercise. I questioned and wondered how different my career might be but I never regretted my decision because I felt that I learnt more about the HR cycle and managing emotions. The word for HR folks who executed retrenchment exercise is resilience.

After going through retrenchment of others and then myself, I always tell people continuous learning is the best way to keep yourself updated with the times and staying employed. If you don’t catch up with changes you will become redundant.

I guess I am not bad of a Sniffy now since I just found my new cheese while still having some of my old.

Favourite line on the wall, “When You stop Being Afraid, You Feel Good! What you are afraid of is never as bad as you imagined.”

Rule of survival, never try never know. Die waiting or die trying.
