Resolution 2022 — Read a book every month, October 2022.

I realised I ran out of non religious and non Chinese books to read too plus there is a discount for Changi Rewards members, so I grabbed a copy of this at the airport because I had time to burn while waiting for my flight to Bangkok.
At work, there is a CSR initiative going on asking for mentors to local tertiary students and I signed myself up for it. Maybe this book will help me get ready for the programme.
I was apprehensive at first in putting my hand up because I’m not a high flyer nor holding a high position, so what can I offer to young people? Time? I think my years of working do mean something.
Plus, I wished I had programs like this in school back then so I wouldn’t waste so much time bumping around trying to figure out what I want to do.
I actually benefitted from having a mentor in one of my previous company so it is a way of giving back too I guess?
I like that the lessons in this book are summarised in bite size “one minute insights”.
My biggest takeaway was knowing the different types of mentoring. Having experienced mentoring professionally, I always thought the word “mentor” is overused but it is just different scenarios.
My upcoming stint can be categorised as Adult-to-Adolescent Mentoring.
From this book, it did indicate being in a mentoring relationship is beneficial to both parties and we can actively seek out opportunities.
Having managed a company wide mentoring program before, it’s more of reiterating what I already know.
However, the more uncomfortable part for me is seeking out mentors for myself. Ask and you shall get. I don’t want to “trouble” other people and I am afraid of rejection and passive when such things are concerned.
What happened? I used to be such a go getter and so driven.
Hopefully, my young mentee will spur me on and give me some perspective and direction to my own career and ignite the fire within of this lazy ass mum of one who settled with an easy job whilst having several side hustles.
More on my mentoring journey here.
