还愿 03: Erawan Shrine

Erawan Shrine in Bangkok

I often wonder what Buddha is four face Buddha (四面佛) during my Buddhist class. I never thought of digging deeper even though I didn’t know the answer.

Didn’t realise it is Hindu until I did some reading when writing this post.

Interestingly, a Hindu Shrine is a popular place of worship among the Chinese community. By the Chinese community, I meant those in Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong.

People often say wishes come true after praying here. Judging from my recent visit, I guess it’s true even though wishes don’t come true immediately.

I have a friend who came to return all the way from Hong Kong recently despite having to go through quarantine because he finally got the promotion he was waiting for. This is faith.

My last visit here was 2016 with my husband and I had an ectopic pregnancy after this trip. Not sure if it was made on this trip.

The husband said he prayed for a child here in 2017 while on business trip here so we decided to return.

COVID took long enough and we finally made it back here.

I’ve visited this place so many times and this is probably the only time I’ve done it right. The vendor whom we bought the offering from outside the temple kindly came in with us and briefed us on the correct way to pray and offered to hold the huge pile of items for us.

In clockwise direction, offer incense, candles and flowers first then dolls or elephant statues.

We returned with a 8 dancer troupe.

After that, we walk to the counter and engaged eight dancers. It is pretty fuss free because the dancers are stationed in the shrine and they can do a short sing and dance ritual ranging from 260 to 710 Baht from two to eight dancers.

People shouldn’t believe in superstition. All I can say is, when nature and science fails, it always provide a reason to believe in divine intervention. Faith keeps things going.

I can’t say it is a chore but it does require a bit of planning for the trip. The moral of the story is, if you pray for something and get it, be prepared to come back to return.

This trip marks the end of traveling overseas to return for being blessed with a child.

More on Keeping the Faith.
