Noob Mentor: Session 3 — Show me your CV

“How many times have you met your mentee?” A colleague who took part in the program asked.

Twice. Same. Same after four months into the programme.

I wondered why my mentee hasn’t contacted me. We were told to let our mentees contact us because it is their responsibility to reach out and drive the conversations. We simply steer it.

Exams. School break. Personal matters.

When she contacted me, it was almost the end of the six months programme. She shared that a grandparent passed away and was really affected. I remembered she mentioned she have a close relationship and I told her to take her time to mourn.

There is no timeline to get over the passing of a loved one. I still think of my grandfather now and then and cry at random times so… who am I to judge?

Anyway we went through each other’s CV. I only updated it a week before because it just so happened that my company needed to submit my trainer certificate and cv to the government for a course accreditation. I can add “Assessor Coach” on my CV for IBF programs now.

“There are tables and columns. Remove them and just use word and pdf,” I said.

In my job searching post on CV writing, I mentioned ATS, a machine reads your cv first before it gets to the human recruiter. Include key words and remove tables and columns because the machine can’t read it.

For people with experience, company names and titles are important. If those without experience, schools and academic are important. You can’t be putting your education first if you have 20 years of experience.

She asked about if she should add awards like Edusave in it. To me, it is worthlesss. An award like winning a medal in a national championship will be something to add on your cv.

Before I ended the session, I told her I won’t go through her cv again because it is up to her whichever format she feels more comfortable with.
