Mentor Me 01: On The Right Track

In my previous post on Pursuing Mentoship, which I mentioned I was in the midst of interviews to get a mentor.

Fast forward to this week, I was matched with my preferred mentor.

Chief Human Resource Officer ✅

Financial Industry ✅

Working Mum ✅

Ooohhhh. I aspire to a a Head of HR one day. That is if I managed to go back to HR.

Our first meeting was more of a get to know you over lunch which her PA arranged.

“A certification in HR is not necessary,” she said.

I know… MNCs don’t bother but it is the local HR and SMEs that requested for this. Recent roles I am interested in the market all indicated a Bachelor or Masters in HR.

Still, I am pursuing a proper HR course now just to meet the expectations.

“It is good to build skills but you also have to practice it,” she said.

After knowing more about my work experiences, my mentor suggested I go into consultancy roles, and get exposure on more training delivery and facilitation.

I shared that my recent side hustle included facilitating a session on CV Writing and Career Navigation to overseas university students. Just content for me to boost my LinkedIn profile.

You are on the right track, she said.

The plan is I concentrate and finish what I started. Learn new skills and practice, then boost my personal branding profile with it.

I thanked her for lunch and I started looking around on how I can work on that. I guess am going to volunteer for my class presentation in two weeks time. 😅
