Election Season

Election is here!

First thing that came to my mind when I got to know the election date was, “Damn, it is the day I return to Singapore from a long awaited girls trip.”

Can I make it back in time? Hence, my friend and I made the decision to book earlier bus tickets back to Singapore.

Politics in Singapore is boring but I still want to vote.

The ruling party will continue winning the majority seats in parliament but I still want to vote.

The opposition in my ward really CMI to the point that they might as well walkover but I still want to vote.

I missed the bulk of the rally last night because I was in a call with classmates for my school work. Normally, I will be at the opposition rally during election time. It’s fun.

It is the only time we dare to criticise the government openly.

If I hadn’t misbehaved in the past and left negative trails in my private life, I might have joined the opposition.

Then again, I wouldn’t like the attention and I won’t like dealing with keyboard warriors so I respect and applaud everyone who is in the public eye for politics.

To my future Members of Parliament

As your middle income Singapore auntie, housing, education, jobs are my main concerns.

Housing

When it comes to housing, who would have predicted that it will inflate so much that new public housing can cost more than half a million dollars. Irony is, it is only yours for 99 years because you never truly own it.

That is the affordable, they said. If you need to use 25 years to pay off something, it is not affordable.

Now that I am a parent, I worry for my child if he can get his own place to start a family in future. I started putting money into his CPF to compound interest because I don’t want him to lose out. It may still not be enough but 不要输在起跑点。

Education

Somebody realised the system of placing emphasis on academics is not for everybody along the way. Plus, the piece of paper is not a guarantee of success and most importantly, job security. I appreciate that we have initiatives to push out upskilling and subsidies for adult learning. More if you are above 40 like me.

Not faring too badly too badly in education, but I still don’t understand why my 5 year old child has homework every weekend. I would prefer to bring my kid outdoors.

Fact is, we have too many educated people working in office, then we have to import labour for other industries, leading to influx of immigration impacting housing, food and schools. The vicious cycle continues.

Jobs

Gone are the days where people hold one job for life. Schools have to churn out the right people for the right job. There are so many choices now.

After going through a retrenchment cycle, I can only say that it is not that people don’t want to stay but the companies can’t guarantee jobs for life. Don’t blame the generation. Loyalty goes both ways.

It is not just having jobs. Better quality, better paying jobs and also job stability.

Is increasing the population through importing foreign labour the only way for growth? What is the proportion of Singaporeans, foreign labour to growth? What about better quality jobs that doesn’t require manual labour?

I love my country but it is getting too crowded and I can’t breathe and I struggle to find space sometimes.

Whichever party it is, please make Singapore a better place for us.

Service Fee

I think I’m really not suitable for doing sales, after sales service, customer service or any type of service.

This client whom I successfully rented out two bedrooms for calls me more frequently than my husband during the period to the point that even the husband was irritated.

He calls and text randomly which I ignored after the transaction.

Today, he sent me a text asking me to remind his tenants to pay April rent. Hello, the tenancy agreement states rent is due on the 1st. How much earlier do you want people to pay you? You live under the same roof, you cannot remind them?

I sat on it for a while since it was during office hours and I did not pick up his call.

I responded, “Chasing for rent is not under my remit. I am happy to send a monthly reminder for a service fee.”

Then he informed he asked the tenants already. See, talk about money run away already. You haven’t paid my commission for the second room yet.

This is not his first rental and I am not the first agent he worked with. I really think he is looking for an excuse to contact me.

Whenever I get lament my youth was gone too fast and I am no longer a sweet young thing, this is the classic example I share of me still being one in the eyes of a man pushing 60.

It is all coming back to me now. Please lah. These trying to chat someone up tactics is not new to me and I am not flattered. It is annoying.

Our relationship is purely business and transactional and I have no intention to know you better. That being said, I can service you very well at a fee.

Damn. This is probably why I don’t do sales for a living.

Housing in SG 07 — Room Rental

Twice this week, I returned home from my real estate work slightly before midnight for room rental leasing.

My take home is about $300 after deductions for each transaction. Not too bad for a side hustle considering the landlord found me through my professional Facebook page which cost me zero dollars.

Wow, I thought. How lucky am I that money dropped from the sky and it is finally happening to me. Now I just need 20 of such deals a month to quit my full time job.

I hated my life when the first appointment was changed from 7pm to 11pm. I hated my life again and questioned myself why am I out hustling close to midnight when the other appointment requested to view at 11pm and arrived 15 mins late.

Then, I comforted myself that I only stay 10 mins drive away and I could go over late at night to complete the paperwork. It was over so fast that I did not even have to pay for parking when I left.

Now that both rooms are rented out, I am so glad I don’t have to entertain the landlord every few hours and text from scammers pretending to be interested to rent.

Landlord: Why so few queries? BECAUSE YOUR ASKING IS FREAKING HIGH AT THIS ULU PART OF THE NEIGHBOURHOOD.

Scammer: Why can’t you give me landlord contact? ARE YOU AN IDIOT? GIVE YOU CONTACT I NO JOB AND NOTHING TO EAT ALREADY.

Who say no one is renting in Singapore? Malaysians working long hours in service and not from Johor are still renting and there are also foreign students.

They contacted me more often than my husband and I dislike picking up calls and answering texts these few weeks.

I reminded myself I am only doing this because it is free money and I don’t say no to money when opportunity come knocking.

I am and I should be thankful and grateful for all of these. May this year be a good year for making more money!
